Chromatic shadow detection and tracking for moving foreground segmentation

چکیده
Advanced segmentation techniques in the surveillance domain deal with shadows to avoid distortions when detecting moving objects. Most approaches for shadow detection are still typically restricted to penumbra shadows and cannot cope well with umbra shadows. Consequently, umbra shadow regions are usually detected as part of moving objects, thus affecting the performance of the final detection. In this paper we address the detection of both penumbra and umbra shadow regions. First, a novel bottom-up approach is presented based on gradient and colour models, which successfully discriminates between chromatic moving cast shadow regions and those regions detected as moving objects. In essence, those regions corresponding to potential shadows are detected based on edge partitioning and colour statistics. Subsequently (i) temporal similarities between textures and (ii) spatial similarities between chrominance angle and brightness distortions are analysed for each potential shadow region for detecting the umbra shadow regions. Our second contribution refines even further the segmentation results: a tracking-based top-down approach increases the performance of our bottom-up chromatic shadow detection algorithm by properly correcting non-detected shadows. To do so, a combination of motion filters in a data association framework exploits the temporal consistency between objects and shadows to increase the shadow detection rate. Experimental results exceed current state-of-theart in shadow accuracy for multiple well-known surveillance image databases Preprint submitted to Image and Vision Computing June 24, 2015 which contain different shadowed materials and illumination conditions.

Moving Cast Shadow Detection
Moving shadow detection is an important topic in computer vision applications, including video conference, vehicle tracking, and three-dimensional (3-D) object identification, and has been actively investigated in recent years. Because, in real world scenes, moving cast shadows may be detected as foreground object and plauge the moving objects segmentation. For example, in traffic surveillance ...
متن کاملEnhanced foreground segmentation and tracking combining Bayesian background, shadow and foreground modeling
In this paper we present a foreground segmentation and tracking system for monocular static camera sequences and indoor scenarios that achieves correct foreground detection also in those complicated scenes where similarity between foreground and background colours appears. The work flow of the system is based on three main steps: An initial foreground detection performs a simple segmentation vi...
متن کاملA Probabilistic Framework Based on KDE-GMM Hybrid Model for Moving Object Segmentation in Dynamic Scenes
In real scenes, dynamic background and moving cast shadow always make accurate moving object detection difficult. In this paper, a probabilistic framework for moving object segmentation in dynamic scenes is proposed. Under this framework, we deal with foreground detection and shadow removal simultaneously by constructing probability density functions (PDFs) of moving objects and non-moving obje...
متن کاملRegion-based Moving Shadow Detection using Affinity Propagation
Moving shadow detection is a challenging task in computer vision applications, such as surveillance, video conference, visual tracking, object recognition, and many other important applications. In this paper, region-based moving shadow detection using affinity propagation (RMSDAP) is presented, which detects shadows in terms of texture similarity. Firstly, we divide foreground image into no ov...
متن کاملAdaptive Foreground and Shadow Detection in Image Sequences
This paper presents a novel method of foreground segmentation that distinguishes moving objects from their moving cast shadows in monocular image sequences. The models of background, edge information, and shadow are set up and adaptively updated. A Bayesian belief network is proposed to describe the relationships among the segmentation label, background, intensity, and edge information. The not...
